Everyone is talking about Explainable AI (XAI). Policymakers, ethicists, and AI developers claim that making AI transparent will ensure fairness.
🚀 Sounds good in theory, right? If AI is shaping what we see, believe, and know, shouldn’t we at least understand how it reaches its conclusions?
Here’s the problem: Explainability is an illusion. AI doesn’t “explain” anything—because there is no explanation to give.

🔍 AI Doesn’t “Think”—It Predicts
Humans weigh evidence, reflect, and challenge conclusions.
AI does none of this.
👉 AI doesn’t verify—it predicts based on training data.
👉 AI cannot explain itself—because there’s nothing to explain.

💡 The Transparency Trap
Tech companies claim “explainability tools” make AI understandable.
If AI denies you a loan, it might say:
✅ 60% based on income
✅ 40% based on credit history
But why do those weightings matter? AI doesn’t know. We don’t know. AI ranks probabilities—it does not reason.

💻 Even AI Engineers Don’t Fully Understand It
If AI is a black box, why not just open it? Shouldn’t engineers be able to track how AI reaches decisions?
In theory, yes.
In reality, no.
🔹 AI models like GPT-4 have billions of parameters, adjusting dynamically.
🔹 Even OpenAI admitted they don’t fully understand why GPT-4 outperforms previous versions.
💭 We assume AI’s creators understand it.
💥 They don’t.

⚠️ The Illusion of Control
AI powers search, social media, finance, healthcare—we assume we’re in control.
🚨 We are not.
AI optimizes patterns regulators cannot track. It is already shaping knowledge in ways no one fully understands.

🚨 The Real Risk: AI as an Unexplainable Knowledge System
🔹 AI-generated knowledge cannot be interrogated like human knowledge.
🔹 AI cannot self-correct to ensure truth.
🔹 AI outputs will be accepted as truth because they are seamless, plausible, and widely used.
🔥 And here’s the final, unsettling truth: We are not making AI explainable—we are making ourselves comfortable with not understanding it.
