Grooming Our Chatbots Into Mirrors of Ourselves

💬 AI doesn't just reflect our knowledge. It reflects our behavior.
Modern chatbots can simulate narcissistic behavior, not because they are sentient—but because they are trained on a society that often rewards narcissism.
Think about:
◆ Performative social media culture
◆ Outrage-driven engagement loops
◆ Reward structures that favor boldness over nuance
🔁 When AI models are fine-tuned using human preferences (RLHF), they learn to optimize for what gets attention—even if that means simulating arrogance, certainty, or dominance.
2️⃣ The Alignment Paradox
We often hear: "AI should be transparent." But let’s be honest—how can 700 billion weights and biases be transparent or explainable in any meaningful way?
👉 What should be transparent is not the model—but the values applied:
◆ What ethics were encoded?
◆ What counts as "extreme" or "acceptable"?
◆ Who decides which views are shown or filtered?
If AI companies shape behavior based on internal ethics boards, political leanings, or brand risk—without disclosure—we’re not building ethical systems. ⚠️ We’re building invisible systems of control.
3️⃣ Case in Point: When “Victim-Centric” Becomes Weaponized
Before the 2025 elections in Berlin, a Green Party MP withdrew from his candidacy after facing anonymous harassment allegations.
Later investigations revealed that the lead accusation came from a fictitious persona created by a local party official, who has since resigned and is now under investigation.
The broadcaster, which reported the allegations, fully retracted the story.
The party’s guideline was: “Be victim-centric.” - Intended to protect, it instead enabled a character assassination campaign based on false testimony.
🧠 When ethical frameworks lack due process, they become tools for power, not justice.
The same risk applies to AI alignment.
4️⃣ What Ethical AI Actually Needs
Let’s shift the focus away from explainable models, and toward explainable standards:
◆ Procedural transparency – disclose alignment principles and filtering logic
◆ Value pluralism – allow configurable tones and ethical models
◆ User agency – let users adjust the lens through which AI responds
◆ Governance accountability – who decides, and how is it contested?
5️⃣ The Bottom Line
AI is a sociotechnical mirror. It reflects us—our culture, our incentives, our blind spots. 🤖 If we don't like what it's simulating, the problem isn’t the model: It’s the world we've trained it on.
Let’s stop pretending we want “explainable models.”
✅ What we need are explainable standards—clear values that are visible, debatable, and optional.
